Kenosha-based Bradshaw Medical Inc. is beginning construction on a new headquarters and manufacturing facility.

The company will have a formal groundbreaking for the building later this month at 10325 58th Place in the Business Park of Kenosha, but groundwork is already under way on the project.

Plans call for construction of a 30,000-square-foot office and manufacturing facility, with another 30,000-square-foot expansion planned in about five years. Founder and Chairman Guy Bradshaw said he hopes to move the company into the new building next spring.

Bradshaw has been a success story among Kenosha start-up companies.

Launched in late 2006, Bradshaw designs and manufactures hand-held surgical tools, specializing in tools for spinal orthopedic surgeries. The company started in a rented 2,500-square-foot facility with a handful of employees.

It was Bradshaw’s second successful launch of a company in the field. He and a business partner started Beere Medical, which was later sold to Teleflex Medical. That company still operates in the Business Park of Kenosha.

After selling Beere, Bradshaw started the new company.

The company now has about 75 employees, holds close to 20 patents, and anticipates 2009 sales of $13 million to $15 million.

“I would say our growth is between 10 and 20 percent this year. We’re pleased with the way things are going given the economy,” Bradshaw said.

He said the company is concerned about ongoing health-care reform efforts and the ultimate impact of the state health-care industry on the business.

“We’re looking for controlled growth,” he said.

The company currently is housed in 15,000 square feet of scattered offices and manufacturing space in rented facilities in the office park. Bradshaw said the new building, financed with help from the Kenosha Area Business Alliance, will be more efficient.
